Example: Effect of oxygen-Demanding Wastes on Rivers A wastewater treatment plant serving a city of 200,000 discharges 1.10 m3/s of treated effluent having an ultimate BoD of 50.0 mg/L and a temperature of 23 c into a river that has a flow of 8.70 m/s, an ultimate BoD of its own of 6.0 mg/L, and a temperature of 20°C. The deoxygenation rate constant at 20°C is estimated to be 0.20/day. a. Assuming complete and mixing at the point of discharge, estimate the ultimate instantaneous BOD of the river just downstream of the discharge point. b. If then river has a constant cross section, so that it flows at a fixed velocity of 0.30 m/s, estimate the BoD remaining in the river at a distance 30,000 m downstream. The treated effluent has a dissolved oxygen level of 2.0 mg/L. The river, just upstream of the discharge point, has a dissolved oxygen concentration of 8.3 mg/L. c. Estimate the initial dissolved oxygen deficit just downstream of the discharge point (again, assuming complete and instantaneous mixing at that point) S 2.
